The Cross You Don’t Pick Up in the Morning Will Crush You by Night
You will carry something today.
Maybe it’ll be your plans. Or your pride. Or your fear.
Maybe it’ll be the pressure to impress, to perform, to get it all right.
But something will land on your shoulders today.
And if you don’t pick up your cross first—whatever you do carry will start to crush you.
Jesus said it plainly:
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
Daily. Not once. Not when it’s convenient. Not just on Sundays.
Every single day.
And here’s what I’ve learned—the cross you don’t pick up in the morning will find you by night.
But without Jesus at your side, it’s heavier. It’s hollow. It hurts more.
✝️ Your Cross Is Your Purpose
We often think “carrying your cross” just means suffering. But that’s only part of it.
Your cross is your calling. Your mission. The purpose God knit into you before you were born.
Jesus didn’t carry His Cross because He enjoyed pain.
He carried it because it was the only way to fulfill His Father’s will.
It was how He saved the world.
And your cross?
It’s how you bring light into the world.
It’s how you stay close to Jesus.
It’s how other people might come to know Him.
🚶♂️ You’re Always Following Someone
Jesus didn’t say “believe in Me and stay where you are.”
He said, “Follow Me.”
If you’re not following Jesus today, you are following someone else.
Maybe yourself.
Maybe the culture.
Maybe Satan.
We don’t like to say that last one—but there are really only two paths.
One leads to eternal life with God.
One leads to eternal death with Satan.
And that choice is made again every morning.
🛑 What Happens When You Don’t Pick It Up
Here’s the truth: life doesn’t pause because you didn’t make a plan.
If you don’t wake up with purpose… you’ll wake up to pressure.
If you don’t choose your cross… you’ll be handed chaos.
And by nightfall, you’ll wonder why you feel so empty. So frustrated. So unfulfilled.
Because the enemy knows what you were created for—and he’ll do everything he can to keep you from living it.
🛠 How to Pick It Up — Every Morning
Here’s the simplest truth I could ever teach anyone:
If I could only give you one habit to change your life, it would be this: Start every day with Jesus and a plan.
Your cross needs to be picked up intentionally. That means:
- Begin with prayer. Even 10 minutes. “Jesus, help me carry the cross You gave me today.”
- Read a short Scripture passage. Let it anchor your thoughts.
- Write down your top 1–3 priorities that align with who God made you to be.
- Remember who you are. And whose you are.
🙌 You Were Made for This
This isn’t a burden meant to destroy you.
It’s a purpose designed to shape you.
Your cross fits your shoulders. It won’t always be easy. But it will always be worth it.
Because when you carry it with Jesus—He walks right beside you.
And the path leads to resurrection.
Pick it up.
Don’t let it crush you.
💬 Reflection Question:
What cross has Jesus invited you to carry right now—whether it’s a mission, a relationship, a daily habit, or a sacrifice?
How might your day look different if you started with that cross in your hands instead of letting the day choose your weight for you?
